Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day is a Federal holiday in the USA. It is observed on the third Monday of every year in order to commemorate his contribution. MLK Day falls on January 17 in 2012. Martin Luther King Day is the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which is observed as a Federal holiday throughout the United States of America.
 
It is a floating holiday, which is based on holidays set on Uniform Monday Holiday Act. His birthday is declared as a holiday after the fifteen years of his assassin. This day falls on the third Monday of January of every year and this time Martin Luther King Day falls on January 17 in 2012. United States Representative Conyers introduced a bill in Congress in order to make the King's birthday as a national holiday.

In 1979, the bill came into a vote in the House of Representative and fell short of five votes. There was an argument over whether, it was declared as a Paid holiday or not unlike the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the USA and Christopher Columbus, the navigator, who discovered America. People all over the world love him because his message on the human rights.

There are some other places like Toronto and Hiroshima in Japan are observing this day as a national holiday because of his unforgettable contribution to mankind. In some parts of the world, Martin Luther King Day is observed as a "Civil Rights Day" and "Human Rights Day". It falls after the two weeks in between Christmas and New Year's Day therefore, many business houses and educational institutions are remaining close for a week. There are many colleges, Universities and Social organizations are conducting seminars on Martin Luther King's Day in order to make aware the younger generation. Some big companies and manufacturing units are observing MLK Day as a floating holiday.
