Lohri festival is celebrated each year on 13th of January. Lohri is basically a festival prayer to fire and the sun god.
 
Lohri Festival is celebrated with big ceremony in North India. At this time Earth starts rotating towards the sun marking the fortunate period of Uttarayan.

First Lohri is very essential for the recently wed and the new born babies as it shows fertility. At night, people collect around the bonfire and throw til, gajak, rewri, puff rice & popcorns into the flames of the bonfire. People pray the bonfire seeking wealth & prosperity. People enjoy by dancing & singing traditional Lohri songs.

Lohri festival Date depends on solar calendar therefore it remains the same always. Lohri date is favorable and significant for Hindus. On January 13 each year sun starts its Uttarayan journey (northward journey) and takes entrance in to Makar Rashi or Tropic of Capricorn. The time of Uttarayan (January 14 to July 14) is considered favorable by Hindus. According to Indian most holy book Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna manifests himself in his full splendor during this time.

Lohri symbols the coldest day in northern India. The earth is most farthest away from the sun at this time and starts its journey towards the sun on Lohri. Therefore bonfire Festival of Lohri symbols the end of cold month of Paush and starting of Magh or the coming of spring. Lohri festival also symbol the final day of the month of Maargazhi, the ninth month of the lunar calendar.
